Valentine’s Day is sometimes vilified for being an overly commercialized—even made up— holiday. But we don’t buy into that. In fact, sending valentines to our sweeties dates back as far as the Middle Ages.
It’s true. The earliest recorded valentine was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, at age 21, while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after being captured at the Battle of Agincourt. Charles penned a poem to his wife, whom he affectionately referred to as “my very gentle Valentine.” She died while he was imprisoned, and his poem was all she had of him.
How romantic. We could all learn a lesson from the young duke who, even under the duress of captivity, made the effort to eloquently compose and send his expressions of love to his wife when great distance kept them apart.
If distance is keeping you from the one you love this Valentine’s Day, there is no better way to bridge the gap than to send a thoughtful gift to remind both of you just how close you really are.
